Week 6 Story: The Wizard and the Maiden

This image represents the cave that the Wizard lived in. I found this image off a google search. https://www.tripadvisor.co.nz/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g298309-d2217966-i179929146-Fairy_Caves-Kuching_Sarawak.html

One day a woman was sitting out by a pond sobbing when what looked like a beggar had walked by. The woman was startled when the beggar tapped her on the shoulder and asked her what was wrong.

"I cannot bear child and I am afraid that my husband will leave me," the woman said.

The wizard replied, "I can help you bear child if you make a deal with me."

"I will do anything for child," said the woman.

"I will impregnate you and you will be able to raise the child for 21 years and then she must return to me," said the wizard.

The woman agreed to the wizard's deal and wondered home. The next morning she awoke and realized that the wizard held up his end of the bargain and she was indeed pregnant. She told her husband and he was so excited and they started preparing immediately.

Nine months down the rode the woman gave birth to a baby girl. The girl grew up into a smart and intelligent maiden.

On the day of the maiden's 21st birthday she was walking around the same pond that her mother once sat at. The wizard popped out of no where and grabbed the girl and took her with him to his cave. While sitting in the cave the maiden saw three spiders and one happened to be the wizard's son. The spider that was his son told the maiden exactly how to respond to the wizard in order for him to let her free.

With the help of the spider the maiden did exactly as the wizard had said but did not respond the way that he wanted so she was released. The spider had followed the maiden and when they were in the clear he transformed into his true self. He was a handsome young man and the maiden grew very fond of him as he helped her to escape.

The maiden and the Wizard's son soon ran into a witch that was also out for the maiden after she heard what had happened. The two quickly transformed into some beggars to escape her and it worked for a little while. The witch found them again so this time they transformed into a mother and child. The witch questioned the two but soon went on her way. But, this time she saw them transform back into the maiden and the wizard's son so she chased them. Once they kind of got a lead from the witch they transformed into a tree and a bird and the witch had no idea so she kept running around looking for them.

The maiden and the wizard's son kept wondering around for what seemed like days but they stumbled upon and abandoned castle in the forest. They went in and made it their home and wed. They lived happily ever after.

Author's Note:  My story is derived from The Wizard-Dervish and in that story a Padishah came across a Dervish and wished upon a son. The Padishah did as the Dervish said and soon the Padishah and his wife birthed a son but after the 20th year he belonged to the Dervish. So came the 20th year of the boy and the Dervish came to get him but as he sat at the pond he saw 3 doves. One of the doves which happened to be the Dervish's daughter told the boy how to respond in order to be released and so he followed her instructions. After the Dervish set the boy free he was allowed to be with the maiden but she was also the daughter of a witch. The witch came looking for them but the disguised themselves many times in order to escape her. They ended up at the palace and got married and live happily ever after. In my Story I wanted to keep the same concept but switch up the perspective a little bit.

  1. Hey Kenzie, I really enjoyed reading your story. I thought you did a great job retelling it, and it was very easy to follow along. I think it was very interesting to read about the maiden’s relationship with the wizard’s son, the spider, and how they become very fond of each other. Overall, I thought you did a great job. Good work!

  2. Hi Kenzie! Your story was very interesting and I like how you made the original story into your own. It was funny to see how the wizards son and the maiden kept transforming into different things so the witch could not find them. The only thing I was just a little confused about: is the wizard the maiden's father, making the wizards son her half brother? Overall, great story!
